Youth Development

Youth Development is essential to the future prosperity of York City Football Club. It is within this scheme that the York City stars of the future are nurtured and encouraged.

Our aspiration is to increase the number of young local footballers in our development programme with the ultimate aim of seeing local boys playing for their local team.

In the past, the scheme has successfully developed footballers such as Jonathan Greening, and Richard Cresswell and Graham Murty.

York City's Centre of Excellence provides regular coaching sessions for under 10s and has teams ranging from under 11s to under 16s. The centre is operated by 14 part time coaches, who provide first class training midweek and manage their individual teams on Sunday mornings at the Club's Wigginton Road Training Ground. We also employ a part time Centre of Excellence physiotherapist who attends all training sessions and matches.

Young players are selected through the club's scouting network and are often spotted playing for school or junior football teams in the community.

At the age of 16, the Centre of Excellence's most talented players are invited to join the Club's Young Apprentice Scheme to develop their talents further and provide the opportunity for a career as a professional footballer. The scheme involves a 2 year development programme which includes 3 and a half days a week football training and 1 and a half days education. We believe it is important to encourage the educational aspect and provide the opportunity to obtain qualifications such as NVQs which will benefit the youngsters in later life.

The scheme is run by a full time UEFA A qualified coach who is based at the Club and works closely with the First Team Manager, Martin Foyle. The operations are also overseen by York City's Youth Development Director, Steve Beck.

The Young Apprentice scheme is funded by various sporting bodies, as well as the Club's Youth Development Fund which actively fundraises throughout the year and also operates the Club's Junior Reds supporters club for young Minstermen enthusiasts.
