Match Report: York City 1-2 Salisbury City

By Max Benson

A wonder-goal from Reece Connolly paved the way for an unlikely Salisbury comeback that consigned the Minstermen to their fifth defeat in six matches.

City had held a deserved half time lead after Djoumin Sangare haunted his former club with a flick-on goal just before the break.

Connolly’s leveller was added to by Darrell Clarke in the second half, though, to leave Martin Foyle’s side with only one point from their last five Blue Square Premier games.

Daniel Parslow was only fit enough to make the bench while David McGurk missed out altogether after both picked up knocks in the latter stages of last Saturday’s defeat to Forest Green.

Sangare was restored to the heart of defence as Ben Purkiss reverted to his natural right back position while Jamie Clarke earned a home debut in midfield.

It took little more than five minutes for City’s injury concerns to increase further as Chris Carruthers hobbled off to be replaced by Courtney Pitt, another home debutant who went on to have an impressive game.

Tommy Widdrington's side were content to sit with men behind the ball and chances were proving few and far between early on.

The Minstermen did, though, survive a minor spell of pressure that culminated in a Connolly effort well wide of stand-in captain Michael Ingham’s left-hand post from eight yards.

Richard Brodie was inches away from his first goal in what seems like an eternity after half an hour.

Pitt’s perfect through ball was met by the big Geordie who cannily turned Aaron Martin before seeing his curling right-foot shot tipped behind by the well-placed James Bittner.

When stuck in a rut, it’s a good idea to do the simple things right and Neil Barrett did just that on 42 minutes.

His free kick after a trip on Pitt was deep into the area and Sangare was on hand to flick past the stranded Bittner, much to the relief of the Bootham Crescent faithful.

It was like a weight off the collective shoulders of Martin Foyle’s men and unrelenting albeit unrewarded pressure followed until the half time whistle.

Much of the same followed immediately after the break as Salisbury’s nervous back line struggled to shackle City’s probing attacking trio.

Connolly, however, restored parity on 54 minutes with a strike that would not have looked out of place in the Premier League.

Initially with his back to goal, the right-sided midfielder spun into space before lashing a drive that dipped in over the helpless Ingham from well outside the area.

The Minstermen were undeterred and continued to press, Rankine the next to worry Bittner with a firm header after Pacquette’s centre from the right.

Brodie was then denied by an outstanding Luke Ruddick tackle that prevented a near-certain goal with City’s top scorer clean through and with only Bittner to beat.

The Wiltshire side went on to take an unthinkable lead after 65 minutes.

A loose pass from Brodie 70 yards down the pitch was seized upon and eventually landed at the feet of Clarke who gratefully slotted home past Ingham from just inside the area to complete a ridiculous turnaround.

Chances naturally began to dry out again although Brodie did manage to nod over from close range as he met Meredith’s cross from the left in the 83rd minute.

Luke Graham had another headed chance, but could only deflect Pitt’s cross into the arms of Bittner as time ran out.

With Kettering and Wimbledon both losing, things could have turned out worse for the Minstermen although the remaining thirteen games grow ever-more important, starting at Altrincham on Saturday.

Line-Ups

York City (4-3-3) – Ingham, Purkiss, Graham, Sangare, Meredith, Clarke, Barrett, Carruthers (Pitt 7), Pacquette (Smith 70), Brodie, Rankine (Gash 70)

Subs Not Used – Parslow, Mackin

Salisbury City (4-5-1) – Bittner, Clohessy, Turley, Martin, Ruddick, Connolly, Adelsbury, Clarke, Anderson, Bush (Tubbs 74), Reid (Gray 60)

Subs Not Used – Cox, Flood, Pryce

Referee – Tony Harrington (Hartlepool)

Yellow Cards – Brodie (York City) Turley (Salisbury City)

Man of the Match – Courtney Pitt

Attendance – 1,867 (13 from Salisbury)

Match Preview: York City v Salisbury City

By Max Benson

How things change.

After sitting in relative comfort in third position since November, a haul of one point from a possible twelve has left the Minstermen outside the play-offs ahead of tonight’s clash with Salisbury at Bootham Crescent (kick off 7.45pm).

The confirmation of Chester City’s expulsion from the Blue Square Premier has done little to help the Minstermen who are now sixth albeit with a game in hand on both Rushden and Kettering, who sit third and fourth respectively.

Salisbury stalwart Matt Tubbs has also found himself at the top of the goal-scoring charts.

Richard Brodie’s hat-trick against doomed Chester has also been chalked off to leave the long-serving Tubbs at the summit on 19 league goals.

The Whites are the only side in the division not to have drawn an away game this season, winning seven and losing nine on the road whilst shipping a less-impressive 33 goals on their travels.

Tommy Widdrington’s men would be in the top half were it not for a ten-point deduction incurred after going into administration last year, leaving the Wiltshire side 17th, three points above the drop zone.

Team News

York City

Alex Lawless looks unlikely to recover in time from a hamstring strain picked up during the home defeat to Eastbourne.

David McGurk and Daniel Parslow are also doubtful after the defensive pair both suffered knocks in the second half of Saturday’s loss at Forest Green.

If both miss out, Ben Purkiss is expected to revert to his natural right back role with Djoumin Sangare pushing for a recall at centre back.

Salisbury City

Chris Giles and Danny Webb will both be absent from the visitors’ back line through injury.

Midfielder Rob Sinclair is also expected to miss out with a hamstring injury that may have brought the former Luton man’s season to a premature end.
