Report

The Minstermen suffered their fourth home defeat of the season despite an improved showing against second-placed Stevenage Borough. Striker Steve Morison (46) opened the scoring for the visitors before midfielder Daryl McMahon (81) sealed the victory.

York City's dismal start to the season continued as Stevenage Borough regained the leadership of the Blue Square Premier following a 2-0 victory at KitKat Crescent.

Second-half goals from Steve Morison (46) and Daryl McMahon (81) consigned their opponents to a fourth home defeat of the campaign.

Meanwhile, the visitors also set a new club record of seven successive clean sheets in the process.

The Minstermen handed debuts to recent signings Nicky Wroe and Nick Hegarty after midfielders Stuart Elliott (illness) and Ross Greenwood (wrist) were both ruled out.

Elsewhere, Darren Craddock and Paul Brayson were recalled at the expense of Ben Purkiss and Onome Sodje.

York's on loan keeper Stephen Henderson turned over a fourth-minute cross from McMahon, before home winger Martyn Woolford cut in from the right and struck a left-footed shot that was collected at his near post by Alan Julian.

The hosts created an opening in the 13th minute when striker Richard Brodie received Brayson's neat pass and had a left-footed effort deflected wide of the far post from the edge of the area.

Stevenage striker Morison saw an 18-yard attempt comfortably saved by Henderson sixty seconds later, while opposite number Julian blocked a dangerous 19th minute cross from Hegarty before the ball was eventually scrambled away to safety.

The Minstermen were still appearing the more likely to score as Brayson had a shot charged down by Barry Fuller from another Hegarty assist five minutes later.

York wasted another chance when Brodie escaped the offside trap to collect Craddock's 28th minute lofted through ball but keeper Julian - who initially advanced before hastily retreating - parried his effort at his near post.

The impressive Hegarty fired over the bar eight minutes later after Woolford's corner had been partially cleared, while Brodie also headed wide from Wroe's cross in the 38th minute.

A fine run by Boro's Craig Dobson ended with Henderson turning John Martin's shot behind three minutes later.

Stevenage also went close in first-half added time as Henderson saved low from Adam Miller's 25-yard free-kick.

The Minstermen were caught cold straight after the break when Martin knocked a free-kick towards MORISON, who turned Darren Kelly on the edge of the area before crashing a right-footed effort into the top corner.

The hosts responded and keeper Julian fumbled from both a Hegarty free-kick and a Brodie shot, before another excellent chance was spurned on 56 minutes when a sparkling run by Woolford took him past three opponents to release Brayson, who screwed the ball wide of the far post.

Boro's Miller could only find the side-netting as the action immediately switched to the opposite end, while a surging break on 65 minutes from York's on loan winger Hegarty produced a fine save from Julian.

Former Aldershot Town midfielder Miller chipped over the bar from 40-yards two minutes later, while Hegarty curled a left-footed effort wide on 72 minutes.

The Minstermen's threat had largely subsided as their opponents sealed the contest with nine minutes remaining, when McMAHON exchanged passes with Miller on the edge of the area before steering the ball beyond the advancing Henderson and into the net off an upright.

Stevenage substitute Alistair John blazed a late effort across goal, but by then victory and a return to the top of the table for the visitors had already been assured.
