Report

The Minstermen were denied following a seven-goal thriller against local rivals Doncaster Rovers in their latest pre-season friendly despite producing a tremendous second-half fightback at KitKat Crescent

York City were finally denied despite launching a tremendous second-half recovery against Doncaster Rovers at KitKat Crescent.

The visitors opened the scoring in the third minute when former Bournemouth midfielder Brian Stock allowed Sam Heard to cross for striker BRUCE DYER to head home.

Rovers doubled their lead five minutes later when Lewis Guy crossed for CRAIG NELTHORPE to fire left-footed into the roof of the net.

York striker Paul Brayson was denied by the legs of veteran keeper Neil Sullivan, while Martyn Woolford (twice), Craig Farrell and Brayson also went close.

But Doncaster extended their advantage on the half-hour as GUY easily rounded keeper Tom Evans after being released by another ex-Bournemouth midfielder, James Hayter.

The hosts reduced the deficit on 51 minutes when substitute Darren Craddock's cross was headed over keeper Ben Smith by fellow replacement ONOME SODJE.

The Minstermen went close through both Sodje and Woolford, before netting twice in quick succession to dramatically level the scores.

Woolford proved the creator of both; crossing from the left on 64 minutes for ex-Rovers' striker CHRIS BEARDSLEY to head home.

Former Frickley Athletic winger Woolford's free-kick assist was then emphatically turned in by SODJE to equalise in the 71st minute.

But the visitors claimed victory just three minutes later when Heard's cross found unmarked substitute PAUL HEFFERNAN converting from ten-yards.
