Report

The Minstermen maintained their recent improvement with a 1-1 draw at Oxford United. Stuart Elliott (31) missed a penalty before Michael Corcoran headed in Alex Jeannin's free-kick six minutes later. Leading scorer Onome Sodje headed an equaliser from Martyn Woolford's cross nine minutes from time.

Striker Onome Sodje scored for the third successive game as the visitors claimed a deserved late point at Oxford United.

Sodje headed home his fifth goal of the season following Martyn Woolford's cross nine minutes from time to cancel out Michael Corcoran's 37th minute opener.

The visitors should already have been ahead six minutes before that as Stuart Elliott's penalty was saved by Billy Turley after striker Paul Brayson had been fouled in the area by Corcoran.

Manager Billy McEwan recalled left-back Mark Robinson following a one-match suspension, while midweek goal-hero Alex Meechan returned on the right flank, with Darren Craddock and Nicky Wroe both reverting to the substitutes' bench.

The Minstermen opened strongly and went close to taking the lead in the third minute when Ben Purkiss' cross was headed against the crossbar by Brayson.

York centre-back Darren Kelly headed over from Purkiss' free-kick three minutes later, while Woolford also volleyed over the bar from 20-yards as the visitors continued to dominate.

Midfielder Elliott's 25-yard free-kick then took a deflection off the wall on its way through to keeper Turley in the 15th minute, before home centre-back Barry Quinn headed Alex Jeannin's corner over at the opposite end five minutes later.

The visitors again threatened when skipper Emmanuel Panther exchanged passes with Sodje on 26 minutes and surged into the area before firing a 15-yard attempt straight at Turley.

The Minstermen missed a glorious opportunity to take the lead on the half-hour when Elliott's quick free-kick prompted clever work in the area from Brayson, who drew a clumsy challenge from Corcoran.

But the hosts were allowed to escape as their opponents proved wasteful from the spot for the second successive away game when Elliott's sidefooted penalty was turned around his left-hand post by Turley.

That miss appeared even more costly when the visitors fell behind five minutes later.

York centre-back David McGurk was penalised on the edge of the area for a foul on striker Yemi Odubade, with left-back Jeannin curling in a free-kick from the right that was headed into the net by CORCORAN.

Woolford poked the ball away from Eddie Anaclet at the far post sixty seconds later, before Quinn stabbed home from the subsequent corner - but the effort was ruled out after striker Rob Duffy had collided with keeper Stephen Henderson.

The visitors were first to show after the break when McGurk headed wide from Brayson's 52nd minute cross following a short corner routine with Woolford, while home striker Paul Shaw narrowly failed to reach Jeannin's cross at the near post five minutes later.

York midfield enforcer Elliott also struck a free-kick over in the 68th minute after Matt Day had fouled Panther, before the visitors made a couple of substitutions that saw Nicky Wroe replace Panther on 73 minutes, and recent signing Russell Fry take over from Meechan four minutes later.

The Minstermen were finally rewarded for their positive display nine minutes from time when determined work from Sodje forced Day into conceding a corner.

Woolford's initial cross from the right was blocked, but after receiving a return pass from substitute Fry his second attempt found the predatory SODJE heading into the roof of the net from seven-yards.

Sodje then almost settled the contest six minutes later when receiving Robinson's quick free-kick and getting round the back of home substitute Chris Willmott before flashing the ball inches wide of the far post.
