York City were left devastated by a sensational late goal blitz
as ten-man Burton Albion recorded a dramatic 4-3 victory at
the Pirelli Stadium.
The visitors were leading 3-1 with just eight minutes remaining
against opponents that had already seen emergency centre-back
Aaron Webster sent-off in the 51st minute.
Craig Farrell
(52) duly converted from the subsequent penalty to add to previous
strikes from Martyn
Woolford (45) and Onome
Sodje (48) following Mark Greaves' (26) opener.
The hosts then rallied magnificently and Shaun Harrad (83),
John McGrath (87) and Daniel Holmes (90) finally turned the
tie around in sensational style.
The Minstermen handed a first start to new striker Sodje alongside
the recalled Richard
Brodie, with Chris
Beardsley and Paul
Brayson both relegated to the substitutes' bench.
Meanwhile, Ross Greenwood replaced the suspended Stuart
Elliott.
The visitors were given an immediate taste of things to come
when Daryl Clare headed over the bar inside the first twenty
seconds from Andy Corbett's cross.
York striker Sodje had a shot charged down by John Brayford,
while Ben Purkiss'
cross from the right on 13 minutes was allowed to run by Sodje
and Farrell wastefully sidefooted wide from 12-yards.
The unmarked Brayford headed straight at Tom
Evans from Keith Gilroy's corner six minutes later, before
the hosts opened the scoring in the 26th minute after GREAVES
was left free at the far post and headed forcefully in from
Gilroy's quickly taken corner.
The visitors should have levelled two minutes later when Sodje
was allowed to race clear despite looking suspiciously offside
and scuffed a weak finish straight at Poole.
The former Charlton Athletic striker then fired over the bar
following Purkiss' free-kick, while at the opposite end Clare
saw an attempt blocked by Evans, and Greaves hoisted another
effort over the target.
York equalised on the stroke of half-time as Brodie helped the
ball on to Sodje, who turned makeshift centre-back Jon Shaw
and crossed for WOOLFORD to drill home from
six-yards.
The Minstermen appeared to take complete control following a
lightening start to the second period in which they scored twice
in four minutes.
Teenage striker SODJE used his outstanding
pace to leave Webster trailing and race onto Greenwood's excellent
48th minute through ball before chipping brilliantly over Poole
from 20-yards.
Brodie then charged into the area four minutes later, and was
denied in his attempts to reach Woolford's subsequent cross
by a sharp tug of his shirt from Webster - who was promptly
dismissed.
Newly-appointed penalty-taker FARRELL confidently
drove home his second spot-kick in four days to increase the
visitors' advantage.
Burton keeper Poole then produced a fine fingertip save to deny
Brodie after Woolford had ventured inside.
But the danger signs were still in evidence as the lively hosts
continued to press forward despite their numerical disadvantage.
Home striker Clare forced Evans into a sharp save before having
a near post header ruled out for offside following Corbett's
cross.
The former 'Golden Boot' winner also headed against the crossbar
in the 77th minute after Evans had failed to claim another cross.
The visitors should have already been out of sight though as
just sixty seconds earlier substitutes Beardsley and Brayson
combined, but the former Newcastle United striker failed to
take the ball around the keeper.
That miss was ultimately to prove very costly as the home side
clawed themselves back into the contest on 83 minutes after
keeper Evans badly misjudged substitute Marc Goodfellow's cross
and fellow replacement HARRAD headed into an
open goal.
The Brewers equalised four minutes later to the delight of their
supporters when the unattended Corbett offered the chance for
McGRATH to beat Evans with a deflected 15-yard
finish off the inside of the post.
York substitute Brayson worked an opening in the area before
shooting horrendously off-target, before the home side completed
a remarkable recovery deep into added time when Clare's shot
deflected perfectly for substitute HOLMES to
leave Evans stranded from eight-yards.
