At The Recreation Ground - Att 2,402
Report
The Minstermen suffered a third straight defeat after goals
from Scott Davies (57) and former loan striker Rob Elvins (73)
earned Aldershot Town a 2-0 victory at the Recreation Ground.
York City continue to slide after recording a third successive
defeat, and seventh from their opening ten games at Aldershot
Town.
The Minstermen remain one of a clutch of five clubs already
appearing increasingly stranded at the bottom of the division,
while also currently finding themselves ten points away from
the relative sanctuary of mid-table.
But it was the visitors' inability to take their available chances
that once again proved their downfall as their early promise
faded and in turn allowed their confident opponents to assume
full control.
York winger Martyn
Woolford headed over inside the first sixty seconds from
Mark Robinson's
cross, while a superb sliding 16th minute challenge from centre-back
David McGurk halted
the run of Louis Soares.
The visitors went close three minutes later when Sodje's low
ball in from the left struck Beardsley at the near post and
deflected narrowly wide, before former City loan striker Rob
Elvins shot beyond the left-hand post on 21 minutes.
The Minstermen were again within inches of taking the lead just
before the half-hour when Woolford's corner from the right was
helped on by skipper Emmanuel
Panther towards Nick Hegarty, whose powerful 20-yard drive
was headed off the line by Rob Gier at the left-hand post.
On loan Grimsby Town winger Hegarty then just failed to pick
out the run of Sodje a minute later, while the recalled Beardsley
cut through two opponents following a quickly taken throw-in
from Darren Craddock
on 33 minutes before forcing Nikki Bull into a fingertip save.
Aldershot centre-back Rhys Day headed over four minutes later,
before Beardsley shot wide from eight yards after Sodje had
chested down Hegarty's 44th minute cross.
Home striker Elvins headed straight at York keeper Stephen Henderson
from Soares' cross sixty seconds later, while on loan Reading
midfielder Scott Davies fired just wide from the edge of the
area after Elvins had escaped the offside trap.
The visitors continued to appear the more progressive after
the interval, and once more went close when Nicky Wroe's 54th
minute corner produced a downward header from Sodje that was
forced off the line by Ben Harding.
But it was their opponents that finally broke the deadlock two
minutes later after defender McGurk was cautioned for fouling
Soares, with on loan midfielder DAVIES delivering
a free-kick that glanced off the head of Wroe on its way into
the net.
Hegarty struck a free-kick over the bar at the opposite end
four minutes later, before the contest was effectively settled
on 73 minutes when Anthony Straker's deep cross from the left
was headed in at the far post by ELVINS.
The Minstermen's earlier threat had now virtually disappeared,
although they were denied a clear scoring opportunity six minutes
from time when substitute Brodie raced free, only for the referee
to bring play back and award the visitors a free-kick after
their opponents had been caught offside.
Former Darlington centre-back McGurk also twice went close either
side of Soares' late effort being deflected over by Craddock,
heading over from Wroe's 87th minute corner before miscuing
an attempted finish from eight-yards deep into added time.
