Reg Baines |
 |
City's pre-war scoring hero was local lad Reg Baines who netted
93 goals in 140 senior appearances.
Born in York in 1907, Reg had three spells with the club the
first being in the Midland Leagues days in the mid 1920's. He
went on to play for Selby Town and Scarborough before re-joining
City in September 1931 and he scored on his Football League
debut in a 1-1 draw at Carlisle. He top scored that season with
29 goals in 32 games and he equalled that tally in 1932/33 when
he played 39 times. (The total of 29 goals in a season remained
a City record until 1951/52 when Billy Fenton netted 31 times.)
In those two seasons Reg completed five hat tricks, one of which
was in a 7-2 win over Halifax Town on 23rd April 1932 which
was the last league match to be staged at Fulfordgate.
In May 1933 he was transferred to Sheffield United for the then
sizeable fee of £500 and then the following year moved
to Doncaster helping Rovers gain promotion to Division Two.
In May 1937 Reg returned to Bootham Crescent and figured in
City's FA Cup exploits when they reached the sixth round.
His finest hours was in the fourth round on the 22nd January
1938 when he scored a hat trick in City's 3-2 win over First
Division West Bromwich Albion when the side came from 2-1 down
in the last six minutes to record a famous victory. That season
Reg netted 28 League and Cup goals and went on to finish his
career at Barnsely and Halifax Town before the outbreak of war.
He was also a very good cricketer and played many seasons for
Rowntrees the company where he worked for over 50 years.
Reg died whilst on holiday in 1974 aged 67.
