Phil Boyer

One of the most talented forward to play for City was Phil Boyer who was a very popular player in his time at Bootham Crescent in the late 1960's.

He joined the club from Derby County in the summer of 1968 for a free of £3,000 and was signed by then City boss Joe Shaw. In his first season he struck up a fine striking partnership with Ted MacDougall and later in their careers the due starred again together at Bournemouth, Norwich City and Southampton.

In 1969/70 Phil finished top scorer with 12 League and Cup goals and helped the club reach the fourth round the FA Cup for the first time in 12 years. In that run he scored in ties against Bangor City, Cardiff City and Middlesbrough.

Midway through the promotion season of 1970/71 he was transferred to Bournemouth for a then club record fee of £20,000. At the time he was leading marksman with 13 League and Cup goals to his credit.

A most exciting and lively player with fine ball skills, Phil thrilled City fans in his two and a half seasons with the club.

He later played for Norwich City, Southampton and Manchester City. Whilst at Carrow Road he was capped for England Under 23s and in 1975/76 received a full England cap when he played against Wales.. In 1979/80 when at Southampton he was the top marksman in Division One.

Upon leaving Maine Road in 1982 he had a short spell in Hong Kong before finishing his playing days in non-league football.
