One of the most talented forward to play for City was Phil Boyer
who was a very popular player in his time at Bootham Crescent
in the late 1960's.
He joined the club from Derby County in the summer of 1968 for
a free of £3,000 and was signed by then City boss Joe
Shaw. In his first season he struck up a fine striking partnership
with Ted MacDougall and later in their careers the due starred
again together at Bournemouth, Norwich City and Southampton.
In 1969/70 Phil finished top scorer with 12 League and Cup goals
and helped the club reach the fourth round the FA Cup for the
first time in 12 years. In that run he scored in ties against
Bangor City, Cardiff City and Middlesbrough.
Midway through the promotion season of 1970/71 he was transferred
to Bournemouth for a then club record fee of £20,000.
At the time he was leading marksman with 13 League and Cup goals
to his credit.
A most exciting and lively player with fine ball skills, Phil
thrilled City fans in his two and a half seasons with the club.
He later played for Norwich City, Southampton and Manchester
City. Whilst at Carrow Road he was capped for England Under
23s and in 1975/76 received a full England cap when he played
against Wales.. In 1979/80 when at Southampton he was the top
marksman in Division One.
Upon leaving Maine Road in 1982 he had a short spell in Hong
Kong before finishing his playing days in non-league football.
