Maurice Dando |
 |
For two seasons in the mid 1930's Maurice Dando led the City
attack in fine style finishing top scorer on each occasion and
thrilling the Bootham Crescent crowds with his lively and energetic
style.
Born in Bristol in 1905 he played for Bath City before joining
Bristol Rovers in 1928 initially as an amateur. Maurice joined
City in the summer of 1933 and scored twice on his debut at
Crewe Alexandra on 30th August 1933. He went on to net 25 goals
in 41 league appearances in 1933/34 and proved a worthy successor
to previous leading marksman Reg Baines who had left for Sheffield
United at the end of the previous campaign.
In 1934/35 Dando again was top scorer with 21 goals and in the
two seasons with City he recorded three hat tricks. These were
in a 6-1 win at home to Rochdale in March 1934, a 5-0 victory
over Rotherham United in November 1934 and in his penultimate
game for the club a 7-0 home thrashing of Carlisle United in
March 1935.
In total he notched 46 goals in 86 League and Cup games for
City.
He left for Chesterfield in June 1935 and notched 27 goals as
he helped the Derbyshire club win the Division Three (North)
Championship in 1935/36. He finished his playing days at Crewe
Alexandra two years later. Trouble by ill health, he died in
1949 aged 44.
A very popular player, Maurice proved one of City's most prolific
marksmen in the club's early days in the Football League.
