Keith Walwyn

Truly a giant and legend in City's history was Keith Walwyn who in six magnificent seasons with the club (1981-87) scored 140 goals in 291 League and Cup appearances.

Born in Nevis in the West Indies in 1956 Keith was signed by then City boss Barry Lyons for a bargain £4,000 in the summer of 1981 from Chesterfield. He had earlier played for Winerton Rangers and Guiseley. He scored on his debut for City on an opening day win of the season game at Tranmere Rovers on 29th August 1981.

Over the next six years he led the City attack with great success and was one of the most feared and respected strikers in the lower leagues. Apart from 1984/85 when he missed a number of games through injury he notched over 20 goals each season and twice (1982/82 and 1986/87) was voted 'Clubman of the Year'. He scored 25 goals in the Fourth Division championship campaign of 1983/84 when he formed an outstanding striking partnership with John Byrne. He also figured in the FA Cup runs in the mid 1980s when the Club reached the fifth round in successive seasons.

Transferred to Blackpool in 1987 for £35,000 he later played for Carlisle United before ending his playing days with Kettering Town.

Keith sadly died in April 2003 aged 47 following a heart operation. He had retained a great love for his former club and in 2002 attended the meeting at the Barbican which launched the Supporters' Trust.

His name lives on and in August 2006 his widow Liz officially opened the Keith Walwyn Vice Presidents Lounge at the ground.

Keith, second in the all time scoring list for City behind Norman Wilkinson, will be remembered for his tremendous commitment. Described as an old fashioned centre forward he thrilled the Bootham Crescent fans in the 1980s with his endeavour and scoring feats.
