Without a doubt one of City's stars in the 1990's was right
winger Jon McCarthy who thrilled the Bootham Crescent crowds
with his tremendous pace, ball control and never say die attitude.
Jon made his City debut early in the 1990/91 season having earlier
played for Hartlepool United and then Shepshed Charterhouse,
whilst studying at Nottingham University. He gained a Bachelor
of Sport Science and Administration degree and turned professional
in March 1991. That summer he won a bronze medal in the World
Student Games in Sheffield as a member of the Great Britain
team.
In his five seasons with City he twice won the "Clubman
of the Year" award - 1991/92 and 1994/95 and in his
last fours years was a virtual ever present. He starred in the
promotion-winning season of 1992/93 and the following year when
City reached the Division Two promotion play-offs.
His constant dashing displays attracted the attention of several
clubs and just prior to the start of the 1995/96 campaign was
signed by Port Vale for a fee of £450,000
In total he made 233 League and Cup apperances for City and
scored 38 times.
Jon went on to play for Birmingham City and also win 18 caps
playing for Northern Ireland the country of his father's birth.
He had another spell at Port Vale and briefly returnted to City
in November 2002 playing in a home win against Leyton Orient.
