City's "Mr Consistency" in the 1980s was undoubtedly
local lad Gary Ford.
He was on schoolboy forms with Hull City before joining City
as an apprentice in the summer of 1977 at the same time as John
Bryne.
Gary made his senior debut at the age of 17 on 21st October
1978 in a Fourth Division game at Reading operating chiefly
on the right side of the midfield. He quickly established himself
in the first team and from 1980 to 1987 was a virtual ever present.
Indeed from September 1981 to April 1986 he did not miss a single
home game. A key man in the Division Four Championship winning
side of 1983/84 he also figured in the FA Cup runs of the mid
1980's. In the fifth round in 1985/86 he gave City the lead
against Liverpool before the visitors snatched a replay.
He went on to make 435 League and Cup appearances, which puts
him fifth in the all time appearances list for the club for
the club, and scored 64 goals.
In june 1987 he was transferred to Leicester City for £25,000
and later played for Port Vale and Mansfield Town.
He had a successful time with the latter clubs helping Vale
win promotion to Division Two and the stags to promotion to
the Third.
Gary later had spells playing in Norway.
