Billy Rudd |
 |
One of the outstanding inside forwards to play for the club
was Billy Rudd who captained the promotion winning side of 1964/65.
His uncle Jimmy Rudd played for
City in the 1940's and Billy inherited a lot of his relation's
skills.
Billy played for Manchester and Lancashire Boys when a team
mate was Nobby Stiles and had trials with Manchester United
and Arsenal before joining Stalybridge Celtic. He signed for
Birmingham City in 1959 and went on to make a number of First
Division appearances for the Blues before moving to City in
November 1961.
In four seasons (1962-66) he missed just three senior games
and in total made 212 league appearances and scored 31 goals.
The outstanding season for Billy and the side was in 1964/65
when the club won promotion from Division Four playing some
magnificent football under the inspired leadership of Billy.
City finished third and were piped by just one point for the
title by Brighton and by runners-up Millwall.
At the end of the following season Billy moved to Grimsby Town
and then went on to play for Rochdale and Bury. By the time
he had finished his playing days in 1978 he had made a total
of 574 Football League appearances and scored 68 goals.
