Alf Patrick |
 |
York-born Alf Patrick was City's scoring hero in the immediate
post-war era. He thrilled the big crowds in that soccer boom
time with his scoring feats and his wholehearted enthusiasm.
He made his Football League debut on the 2nd November 1946 in
a home win over Stockport County. Alf netted that day and went
on to score 17 goals that season in 23 appearances. The following
campaign he chalked up 19 goals in 27 games but his best season
was in 1948/49 when he scored 26 times including five against
Rotherham United in November 1948. City beat the then Northern
Section leaders that day 6-1 in front of over 19,000 and his
tally of five goals remains an individual club scoring record
for City in the Football League. That season he also scored
twice in another famous win when City beat Hull City at Boothferry
Park 3-2 in front of 40,000.
Alf also scored four times in a win over Halifax Town in August
1947 and recorded four other hat tricks.
By the end of the 1951/52 season he had become the first City
player in peacetime football to complete 100 League goals for
the club and when he finished his first team playing days the
following season, he had scored 117 goals in 241 League and
Cup appearances. This places him fourth in City's all-time scoring
lists behind Norman Wilkinson, Keith Walwyn and Arthur Bottom.
Alf finished his playing career after a short spell with Scarborough
in 1954/55 and then returned to Bootham Crescent in a training
and coaching capacity with City's junior side.
A very good cricketer, he played many seasons for Dringhouses.
Alf retains a great interest and love for his local side and
attends a number of home games. He is still also a very keen
bowler.
