In 1961/62 City reached the last eight of the newly instituted
Football League Cup. En route to that stage they knocked out
First Division Leicester City in the second round at Bootham
Crescent. 13,273 saw a fine 2-1 win with Peter Wragg and John
Stainsby on the scoresheet.
1964/65 was an outstanding season for the club which saw them
win promotion from the Fourth Division for the second time in
their history.
A number of home games attracted a five figure crowd including
over 13,000 which saw Tranmere Rovers beaten 4-0 in a top of
the table clash with Derek Weddle hitting a hat trick. City
clinched promotion on the last day with a 4-0 success at home
to Halifax in front of 12,419 with goals from Paul Aimson (2),
Billy Rudd and Andy Provan.
The team who played that day (24th April 1965) was that that
had featured for much of the memorable campaign and was:
Forgan, Baker, Heron, Woods, Jackson, Walker, Weddle, Wilkinson,
Aimson, Rudd, Provan
The 1960s were a relatively quiet period in the history of the
ground.
In 1965 the half-time scoreboard at the Shipton Street End ceased
to be used for that purpose but remained as an advertising hoarding.
In March 1966 an attendance of 19,240 saw the Third Division
fixture against Hull City and in February 1968, Bootham Crescent
staged its first major neutral match when the Tigers played
Middlesbrough in the third round FA Cup second replay. 'Boro
won 1-0 in front of 16,524.
