On 5th March, 1938 Bootham Crescent hosted its record ground
attendance when 28,123 saw City and Huddersfield Town battle
out a goalless draw in the sixth round of the FA Cup. City had
been drawn at home that memorable season in each of the previous
three stages of the competition and on each occasion a new attendance
record had seen set. 13,917 saw Coventry City beaten 3-2 in
the third round and then 18,795 witnessed the defeat of First
Division West Bromwich Albion also by a 3-2 scoreline. In the
Fifth round another First Division giant was slain when Middlesborough
were beaten 1-0 in front of 23,860. The first big FA Cup tie
staged at Bootham Crescent had been on 12th January, 1835 when
First Division Derby County were the visitors. A crowd of 13,612
saw the Rams win with a late goal netted by England international
Sammy Crooks.
